Montessori Musings: No Place Like MSNV

While I’m relatively new to the world of Montessori, I’ve spent more than a decade working in informal science education. During that time, I’ve been in schools large and small, rural and urban, modest and fully-funded. However, in all of those instances I’ve never witnessed what I see each time I enter MSNV—school as an extension of home.

Home has a variety of meanings, but Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as a familiar or usual setting, a congenial environment. Sure, I liked school as a child, but I can say with certainty that my ten-year-old self did not navigate the halls of my elementary school in the same manner as our students here at MSNV. Our students are poised, self-assured, and have independence well beyond their years. These qualities are able to develop and mature when nurtured at “home,” a place where they feel safe to learn and explore at their own pace.

It’s refreshing to see students take such ownership in their education, a true embodiment of MSNV’s Portrait of a Graduate. There are many paths to a good education, but there’s no place like MSNV!
